FUEL-UP at ESCAPE Conference 2026

We are pleased to announce that on June 23, Konstantinos Stergiou, Chemical Engineer at Aristeng, will be representing FUEL-UP project at the ESCAPE Conference 2026 in Sheffield (UK).

Konstantinos will present Aristeng’s recent study: “Exploring pyrolysis off-gases valorisation pathways within advanced biofuel production: Process design and comparative assessment from an environmental and techno-economic perspective.”

Key Insights from the Research:

  • The Goal: Decarbonizing industrial energy and transport requires sustainable, integrated routes for advanced biofuel production.
  • The Process: Thermochemical conversion of forest biomass via fast pyrolysis yields around 0.7 kg of bio-oil per kg of feedstock offers a promising pathway, producing bio-oil that can be further upgraded into fuels suitable for aviation and maritime sectors.
  • The Innovation: While bio-oil is the primary focus, the accompanying side-streams (off-gases and biochar) hold additional, unexplored valorization potential.

This study introduces a novel process design and holistic evaluation of alternative configurations for these side-streams, combining thermo-economic optimization, techno-economic analysis (TEA), and preliminary greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions assessments.
