On June 23-24, 2026, FUEL-UP participated in ESCAPE Conference in Sheffiled, UK, with three presentations.
Konstantinos Stergiou, Chemical Engineer at Aristeng, presented AristEng’s work for the FUEL-UP Project: “Exploring Pyrolysis Off-Gases Valorisation Pathways within Advanced Biofuel Production: Process Design and Comparative Assessment from an Environmental and Techno-Economic Perspective”.
The study explored how off-gases generated during fast pyrolysis of forest biomass can be valorised instead of being treated as waste. Using process simulation, techno-economic analysis, and carbon footprint assessment, we evaluated three alternative process pathways: i) off-gases combustion for electricity, ii) electrochemical formic acid production and iii) methanol production.
Matteo Gilardi, Research Scientist, SINTEF, with the poster presentation “Re-parametrisation of NRTL Model for Organics and Alcohols Recovery from Aqueous Phase in Pyrolysis Oil Production” introduced SINTEF’s modelling process to recover at the highest possible purity methanol and ethanol, the only components which are present in concentrations >3%, from the aqueous phase generated during the pyrolysis oil upgrading process.
In his second presentation “Process Design for the Recovery of Valuable Organic Compounds from Pyrolysis Oil Aqueous Phase”, Matteo Gilardi introduced SINTEF’s sprocess to isolate the chemicals embodied in the aqueous phase and exploit them as intermediates to generate biofuels, biochemicals, and pharmaceutical products.
